The Link Between Mirena and PTC

The Law Office of Jean Sutton Martin PLLC is investigating the link between the birth control hormone used in the Mirena IUD and the devlopment of PTC - pseudotumor cerebri, also known as idiopathic intracranial hypertension or benign intracranial hypertension.

The Mirena IUD releases 20 mg of the hormone levonorgestrel every dayfor birth control. Long-term exposure to this hormone has been linked to the development of intracranial hypertension. Other prescription products containing levonorgestrel carry warning of PTC, but Mirena does not. While thousands of women implanted with the Mirena IUD have complained of uterine perforation and migration of the device, many of these women have complained of excruciating headaches, blurred vision, a "swooshing" or "whooshing" sound in their ears and temporary black outs.

Pseudotumor cerebri is a condition in which cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain. This accumulation of fluid creates pressure on the brain, skull and on your entire body. The pressure can cause swelling of the optic nerves and if not treated properly, can lead to permanent loss of eyesight. PTC is more common in obese women.

When PTC is diagnosed, the pressure must be relieved by draining the fluid off of the brain. The condition is often treated by a spinal tap or lumbar puncture to extract the fluid and relieve the pressure.

If you have been implanted with a Mirena intrauterine device and have been diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri, intracranial hypertension or papilledema (swollen nerves in the eye), we invite you to call 888-316-3485 to find out more about the on-going litigation claiming the Bayer has failed to adequately warn patients and their doctors of this health risk
