J&J Withdraws Morcellator Due To Cancer Spread Risk

Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson has finally heeded the calls and withdrawn from the market its power morcellator used in hysterectomy procedures. This decision came long after the FDA, critics and consumer groups had been saying that the morcellator used in laproscopic hysterectomies raises a risk of spreading cancer cells.

To shorten recovery time, many women chose a laproscopic hysterectomy which also meant that they would not have a huge abdominal incision scar. The power morcellator was used to "blast" into tiny bit uterine fibroids and tissue. Unfortunately, the morcellator "blasts" and spreads previously undetected cancer cells throughout the body, leaving women who went in for a routine hysterectomy facing the ordeal of high grade cancer.

Last April, the FDA issued a warning discouraging the use of the Morcellator. Finally after months of concern and a very public campaign waged against them by women who had fallen victim to the cancer horrors created by use of the Morcellator, J&J bowed to pressure to do the right thing and took the device off of the market.
