Second Jury Finds Janssen Failed To Warn Of Risperdal Risks

This year, two juries in Philadelphia have found that Johnson & Johnson division, Janssen, failed to warn about the risk of male breast growth associated with the use of the drug, Risperdal.  In February, a jury rendered a $2.5 million verdict for a young male who had developed size 44DD breasts after using Risperdal for behavioral issues stemming from autism.  In March, in the second trial on this issue, a jury decided that the manufacturer failed to properly warn of the risk of gynecomastia but ultimately ruled that Risperdal did not cause that plaintiff's breast growth.

At least 1,000 lawsuits are pending against Janssen and Johnson & Johnson regarding the development of gynecomastia (abnormal breast growth) in children and adolescent boys using Risperdal.  In the two trials held to date, the plaintiffs have presented evidence that the manufacturer knew as early as 2003 of the associated between Risperdal and abnormal breast development in young boys.  The plaintiffs have also shown evidence of internal study findings that Janssen did not report to the FDA prior to pushing for the drug to be approved for use in children in 2006. There was also evidence that Janssen had heavily marketed the drug for "off label use" in children years before 2006 and had generated significant revenue from these sales.
