Jury Finds Risperdal Linked To Gynecomastia In Young Man

Earlier this year, a Philadelphia jury awarded $2.5 million for a young man who had developed gynecomastia as a result of taking Risperdal.  The jury found that Janssen, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, failed to adequately warn of the risk of gynecomastia -  a condition which causes men and boys to develop breasts.

The young male had been prescribed Risperdal to treat behavioral issues related to autism beginning at the age of 7. By the time he was 13, he had developed size 46DD breasts.  Now age 20, the young male is quite affected by this permanent condition and is facing a mastectomy.

In the trial, the plaintiff presented evidence that Janssen's own internal studies showed that Risperdal raised prolactin levels. Elevated prolactin levels are associated with the development of gynecomastia.  Even though Janssen was aware that a high percentage of children taking Risperdal were developing gynecomastia, Janssen did not change the drug label to provide any warning. In fact, Jannsen downplayed the risk contending that it was 0.1% when in fact 2-5% of children and adolescent users had developed gynecomastia.   Plaintiff presented evidence that Janssen did not submit findings of the internal studies, conducted prior to Risperdal being approved for use in children, to the FDA.

This case was the first jury trial against Janssen for failure to warn of gynecomastia.  There are thousands of cases pending.
